ENECA BIM FORUM: optimisation and automation of design process

The IBB Conference Centre hosted a BIM-FORUM organised by ENECA. The event was attended by more than 700 invited guests from the construction, design and engineering industries.

The forum programm consisted of two main parts. The first part was dedicated to BIM design, where the topics were considered:

  • BIM
  • Plugins, web technologies, AI.
  • BIM-Auditor: quality of BIM-Models in accordance with the EIR..
  • 4/5/6/7D modeling.
  • Managing a successful BIM team.

Based on the results of the first part of the forum, the main trends of today were identified:

- The industry today emphasises on speed of completion rather than cost of projects. Due to this there is an acceleration of all production processes.

- Shortage of qualified specialists due to the shortage of engineers who can work with modern software. This situation contributes to the growth of designers' salaries and the prestige of the profession.

- Designing is becoming a multi-stage process with a maximum degree of automation. This is designing in 3D model, determination of work schedule (4D), project cost (5D), and management of condition and buildings of the designed object (6-7D).

- Use of Artificial Intelligence. With the increasing digitalisation of design and construction, there are more opportunities to apply artificial intelligence. AI will not replace but complement engineers, helping to solve the manpower shortage problem.

These trends are helping to solve one of the major problems - involuntary time wastage in construction.

- According to the number of forum participants compared to what we held 2 years ago, we can really conclude that BIM is not tomorrow, it is already today. Our development in BIM confirms that BIM is a team task and it is the strongest teams that will advance and win. - It is important to start researching and applying artificial intelligence in design today, otherwise we will be on the sidelines of evolution tomorrow. - In the near future, we will make a major technological transition, starting with energy. Then there will be quite global changes in many areas of industry, and it is very important for designers to be ready for this, first of all. Grigory Kuzmich - General Director of ENEKA Company

Main theses from the speakers of ENECA BIM-FORUM:

Tatiana Frolova - BIM-coordinator

For any process, for example, for lintel technology, the important components are the availability of quality content, collaboration technology, and automation of routine processes. Creating an analytical model in Revit and then linking it to the calculation system significantly optimises and speeds up the calculation process.

Elena Bozhenkova - AP Technology Development Manager

Automation of routine processes will help the architect to free up time for his main task - analysing and making design decisions. A high-quality BIM model is the basis for digitalisation in construction.

Olga Pavarotnaya - BIM coordinator

Designing engineering systems in Revit provides us with advantages that allow us to improve the quality of the project, facilitate the linking of communications of adjacent sections and take into account all the nuances during installation. Automatisation of calculations is a new level of productivity.

Dmitry Duvan - BIM coordinator

We use a single data source approach, where all information is stored in families. This allows us to display up-to-date information on plans, sheets and specifications. One of our goals is to establish automatic data exchange between model elements, calculation module and wiring diagrams.

Valery Lappo - BIM programmer

A request for automation should go through 4 stages: analysis of existing solutions, selection of one of the automation methods, implementation, efficiency analysis. Three most popular ways of automation as complexity increases: Dynamo, Python, C#+WPF.

Victor Verlov - BIM programmer

Automation sooner or later leads to writing complex solutions. These, in turn, may require the development of additional subsystems - databases, authorisation, licensing, etc. Therefore, it is important to use the latest tools at all stages of solution creati

Pavel Koleda - KMD Design Engineer

Neural networks in design have a wide range of applications: arrangement of marks on drawings, partial automation of engineering networks laying in a building, quick orientation in any documentation, transformation of unstructured text information into structured form.

Elena Beresten - Estimating Engineer

To manage or to be planned? In order to avoid budget overruns, construction of an object in contractual lines, it is necessary to use effective tools for construction project management. Eneca develops 4D, 5D BIM model and transfers it to the customer for plan-fact control, resource and financial management during the construction process. The software product for maintaining 4D, 5D BIM model is selected individually for each customer based on business processes, shared data environment and available software products. Preliminary correct planning will prevent bad indicators - rule 6P in project management, and 4D, 5D BIM-model will help to realise transparent planning for all participants of the investment project.

Thus, the transition from design automation to BIM implementation on the construction site opens up new opportunities. BIM can be used to improve coordination of work between participants in construction processes, manage resources and construction schedules, and improve the safety and quality of project execution. This will help to further develop and improve BIM practices.
